Choosing Your Sprocket Sizes

Changing sprocket sizes changes the bike's final-drive gearing.

More Acceleration / Shorter Gearing
Go smaller on the front sprocket or larger on the rear sprocket.

This gives the bike stronger acceleration and makes it easier to get into the powerband, but increases RPM at a given road speed and can reduce theoretical top speed.

More Top-End / Taller Gearing
Go larger on the front sprocket or smaller on the rear sprocket.

This lowers RPM at a given road speed and increases theoretical speed for a given engine RPM, but reduces the amount of torque multiplication at the rear wheel and can make acceleration feel slower.

Quick Gearing Guide

• -1 Front = Noticeably shorter gearing / stronger acceleration
• +1 Front = Taller gearing / less acceleration
• +1 Rear = Slightly shorter gearing / more acceleration
• +2 or +3 Rear = Progressively shorter gearing / stronger acceleration
• -1 or -2 Rear = Taller gearing / more top-end potential

A one-tooth change at the front sprocket has a much larger effect than a one-tooth change at the rear.

Important: Gearing changes can affect speedometer accuracy, chain length/adjustment range, wheel position, clearance, and electronic systems depending on the motorcycle. Extreme gearing combinations may require a different chain length. Always verify proper chain adjustment and clearance after installation.
